## In short

- Most capsules need plain tees, a shirt, a knit, a blazer, jeans, trousers, a dress, a jacket and three kinds of shoes.
- Pick the core in two or three neutrals, then add a few weather pieces each season and store them after.
- Change the list for your week (office, home, school, hot or cold) and leave off pieces that only go with one thing.

A capsule wardrobe checklist covers 14 core pieces: plain tees, a button-down shirt, a fine knit, a cardigan, a blazer, a jacket, jeans, tailored trousers, a skirt, a simple dress, sneakers, flats, ankle boots and an everyday bag, all in colors that go together. You probably own several of them already.

Use the tables below to tick off what you have, then change the list to fit your life: your job, your weather, your weekends. It works as a minimalist wardrobe checklist too, since every piece on it has to earn its place.

## The core checklist

These pieces make the most outfits from the fewest clothes. Pick them in your neutrals so they all go with each other.

### Tops and layers

| Piece | Why it earns its place | Colors |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Plain tees (2 or 3) | Go under everything, every season | White, black, gray |
| Button-down shirt | Worn open, tucked, or under a knit | White, pale blue, a stripe |
| Fine knit sweater | Dresses up jeans, layers over shirts | Cream, navy, camel |
| Cardigan | A soft layer for cool mornings | Gray, oatmeal, black |
| Blazer | Makes jeans look ready for work | Black, navy, camel |
| Everyday jacket | Covers spring, fall and mild days | Denim, olive, camel |

### Bottoms, dresses, shoes and a bag

| Piece | Why it earns its place | Colors |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Straight or slim jeans | Go with nearly every top | Dark or mid blue |
| Tailored trousers | Work, dinners and travel days | Black, navy, gray |
| A skirt or second trousers | Changes the shape of an outfit | A neutral or your accent |
| A simple dress | One piece and the outfit is done | Black, navy, a print you love |
| Sneakers | Every casual day | White, cream |
| Flats or loafers | Dressier days without heels | Black, tan |
| Ankle boots | Cold days, with jeans or a dress | Black, brown |
| An everyday bag | Carries your day, goes with all | Black, tan |

> **Tip:** Go through the list with your closet open and tick only the pieces you wore in the last month. A blazer you never reach for doesn't count, even if you own one.

Then count your ticks. If you have most of the core, your capsule is nearly there. The pieces you are missing are your gaps: fill them one at a time, starting with the one that would make the most outfits.

## What makes a core piece worth keeping

Owning a piece on the list is not enough. A core piece gets worn more than anything else you own, so it has to pass a few checks.

- **It fits now.** The shoulders sit right, the trousers stay up without a belt, and you can sit down and lift your arms.
- **It goes with at least three other pieces** on the list. A shirt that only works with one skirt is not core.
- **The fabric holds up.** Knits that keep their shape after washing, tees thick enough not to show through, seams that lie flat.
- **It is comfortable all day.** Shoes you can walk in for an hour, waistbands you forget about.
- **You would buy it again today.** If not, it is a gap waiting to be filled, not a tick.

## Seasonal add-ons

On top of the core, add a few pieces for the weather each season, then store them when it ends.

| Season | Add | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Spring | Rain jacket, light knits, ballet flats | Showers and cool mornings |
| Summer | Linen shirt, shorts, sundress, sandals | Heat, and fabrics that breathe |
| Fall | Chunky knit, a leather or suede jacket | Layers for days that change |
| Winter | Warm wool coat, scarf, thermal layers | Warmth that still matches |

Keep the add-ons in your palette too. A summer dress in your accent color goes with the sneakers and the jacket you already own, so it adds outfits instead of standing alone.

## Change it for your life

The checklist is a starting point. Change it to fit the week you really have.

- **You work in an office.** Add a second pair of trousers and two more shirts or blouses, and drop the shorts. A [business casual](https://www.clozzie.app/blog/business-casual-outfit-ideas) week needs more tops than bottoms.
- **You work from home or study.** Swap the blazer for a second cardigan, add soft knit trousers, and keep one outfit ready for days out.
- **You live somewhere hot.** Linen and cotton stay in all year. The jacket becomes a light overshirt and the boots become sandals.
- **You live somewhere cold.** Count the warm coat, boots and thermal layers as core, and keep two or three sweaters in rotation.
- **You have kids or a job on your feet.** Pick fabrics that wash easily and shoes you can stand in all day.

## What to leave off

A good checklist also says what doesn't belong in the capsule.

- **Pieces that only go with one thing**, like a top that works with a single skirt.
- **Clothes that don't fit right now.** Store them outside the capsule if you want to keep them.
- **Trend pieces you aren't sure about.** Add one later as an accent, if it still feels like you.
- **Duplicates you never rotate**, like five black tees when you only ever wear two.
- **Rare-event clothes.** Keep the wedding outfit, just outside the count.

## Tick it off against your closet

The quickest way to use the checklist is with your whole closet in view. In [Clozzie](https://www.clozzie.app/) your pieces are sorted into tops, bottoms, shoes and more, and you can filter by type and color, so "do I own a navy knit?" takes a second to answer. Log your outfits on the calendar and its insights show your most worn pieces too, which tells you which core pieces you already rely on.

Once you have ticked off what you own, [build the capsule around it](https://www.clozzie.app/blog/capsule-wardrobe-guide), then plan its looks with these [capsule wardrobe outfits](https://www.clozzie.app/blog/capsule-wardrobe-outfits).

## Questions people ask

### What should be in a basic capsule wardrobe?

Plain tees, a button-down shirt, a knit, a blazer or cardigan, jeans, tailored trousers, a simple dress, a jacket, sneakers, flats and boots, all in colors that go together.

### What is the difference between a capsule and a minimalist wardrobe?

A minimalist wardrobe means owning fewer clothes in general. A capsule is a planned set of pieces that all mix and match, usually changed by season.

### What colors should a capsule wardrobe be?

Two or three neutrals for the big pieces, like navy, cream and camel, plus one or two colors you love for tops and small things.

### Should I buy everything on the checklist?

No. Tick off what you already own and wear, then add only the gaps that would make several outfits work.
