How to make an outfit collage: as a flat lay, from cut-out photos of your own clothes or as a mood board, on a plain background from top to bottom.

In short

  • An outfit collage is one look made from its separate pieces, laid out top to bottom on a plain background.
  • Make it as a flat lay of real clothes, as a digital collage of cut-out photos, or as a mood board of ideas.
  • For a clean one: cut out every piece, keep sizes true, let pieces overlap a little and leave space around it.

An outfit collage is a picture of one complete look made from its separate pieces, laid out top to bottom on a plain background. You can make one by laying real clothes flat and taking a photo from above, or by cutting out photos of each piece and arranging them on a page.

People make them to plan what to wear, to collect ideas for a style, and to share a look. This guide covers the three ways to make one and the steps for a clean digital collage.

Why make an outfit collage

A collage shows you the outfit before you put it on. That helps more than it sounds.

  • Plan ahead. See tomorrow's outfit tonight, or a whole week of work looks, without trying everything on.
  • Check that it works. Colors and proportions are easier to judge when the pieces sit side by side.
  • Find your style. A set of looks you love shows what they share: a color, a shape, a kind of shoe.
  • Share it. A clean collage is easy to post, or to send to a friend who asks what to wear.

Three ways to make one

WayWhat you needGood for
Flat layReal clothes, a bed or floor, daylightA quick look, packing for a trip
Digital collageCut-out photos of your own piecesPlanning outfits you will wear
Mood boardSaved pictures, swatches, magazine cuttingsFinding a style or a palette

A flat lay is the quickest, but you lay it out again every time. A digital collage takes longer the first time, since each piece needs a photo, but after that a new look takes a minute. A mood board is for ideas rather than outfits, so it can hold pieces you don't own yet.

How to make a flat lay

  1. Pick a plain background. A light bedspread, a linen sheet or a clean floor. No pattern behind the clothes.
  2. Use daylight. Near a window, with no flash, so the colors look true.
  3. Lay it out the way you wear it. The top above the bottoms, shoes at the bottom, the bag and jewelry to one side.
  4. Tidy every piece. Smooth the wrinkles, fold the sleeves in, roll a cuff if you would wear it rolled.
  5. Shoot from straight above. Stand on a chair if you need to, so nothing looks stretched.

How to make a clean digital collage

A digital collage looks best when every piece is cut out and the page is calm. The steps:

  1. Photograph each piece on its own, flat or on a hanger, in daylight.
  2. Cut it out of its background. A clean edge is what makes it look like a collage rather than a pile of photos.
  3. Start from a plain background: white, cream or one soft color.
  4. Place the pieces top to bottom in the order you wear them, as in the table below.
  5. Let pieces overlap a little. A top that sits slightly over its trousers looks like an outfit. Pieces with gaps between them look like a shop page.
  6. Keep the sizes true. Shoes should look smaller than trousers, and a bag smaller than a coat. Resize anything that looks off.
  7. Leave space around it. A margin on every side makes the look easy to read.

Turn collages into a lookbook

One collage plans a day. A group of them plans a week, a trip or a season. Group them by what they are for (work, weekends, a wedding, a holiday) and you see at a glance whether you have enough looks, or whether every outfit leans on the same pair of jeans.

That is how a capsule wardrobe gets planned too: a set of collages shows whether a few pieces really make enough outfits. For a trip, the same set is your travel capsule wardrobe on one page. And if you are not sure which pieces belong together, start with how to put outfits together.

Make collages from your own closet

The slow part of a digital collage is cutting out every piece. Clozzie does that part for you: add a piece from a photo and it removes the background and fills in the type and color. On the outfit canvas, drop your own pieces in, move and resize them, and save the look. Swap one piece without starting over to try another version, then group your outfits into lookbooks for work, a trip or a wedding.

Because every collage is made of clothes you already own, each look you save is one you can wear tomorrow. Plan it on the calendar for a day ahead, or log it on the day you wear it.

Questions people ask

What is an outfit collage?

A picture of one outfit made from its separate pieces, usually laid out top to bottom on a plain background. It can be a photo of a flat lay or a digital layout of cut-out photos.

What is the difference between a flat lay and an outfit collage?

A flat lay is a photo of real clothes laid on a surface. A digital collage is put together from separate photos of each piece, so you can change one piece without laying everything out again.

What background is best for an outfit collage?

A plain, light one: white, cream or a single soft color. It keeps the eye on the clothes and makes the cut-out edges look clean.

Can I make an outfit collage on my phone?

Yes. Photograph each piece, cut it out of its background, then place the pieces on a plain page. A closet app can do the cutting out for you.
