Vacation packing list for one week, with counts.
A one-week vacation packing list with counts for clothes, shoes, toiletries, documents and tech, plus a carry-on version and changes for each kind of trip.

In short
- For a week: 5 to 6 tops, 3 to 4 bottoms, 1 or 2 dresses, 2 layers and 2 or 3 pairs of shoes.
- Keep toiletries small, and documents, chargers and medicines in the bag you carry.
- For a carry-on, cut to 4 tops, 2 bottoms and 2 pairs of shoes, and plan one laundry day.
A one-week vacation packing list comes down to 5 or 6 tops, 3 or 4 bottoms, a dress or two, two layers, two or three pairs of shoes, a small toiletry bag and your documents. Plan an outfit for each day first, and the clothes part almost writes itself.
Below is the full list by category, with counts. Use it as a template: copy the tables into your notes and tick things off as you pack.
Clothes and shoes for one week
| Item | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tops | 5 to 6 | Tees, a shirt, one dressier top |
| Bottoms | 3 to 4 | Jeans or trousers, shorts or a skirt |
| Dresses or jumpsuits | 1 to 2 | For dinners out and hot days |
| Layers | 2 | A knit and a light jacket |
| Underwear and socks | 7 to 8 | One a day, plus a spare |
| Sleepwear | 1 to 2 | Can double as loungewear |
| Swimsuits | 1 to 2 | Two if you swim daily, so one dries |
| Shoes | 2 to 3 | Walking shoes, sandals, one dressier pair |
Count your plans, not just your days. A week of beach days with two dinners out needs mostly light, casual pieces and two outfits that dress up. A city week of long walks needs comfortable bottoms and shoes first, and the rest can be simple.
Keep the clothes in one palette so every top goes with every bottom. That is what lets six tops and four bottoms cover a whole week without anyone noticing a repeat. Our guide to a travel capsule wardrobe shows how to choose the pieces.
Add a few small things: sunglasses, a sun hat, a belt or a scarf, and a bag for days out. They change an outfit more than they take up space. Wear the bulkiest shoes and your jacket on the way there.

Toiletries, documents and tech
Toiletries take more space than you expect, so pack small versions and only what you use every day. If you are staying in a hotel or a rental, check what it already provides, like shampoo, soap or a hair dryer, before you pack your own.
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Toothbrush and toothpaste | A travel-size tube |
| Skincare and sunscreen | Small bottles or solid bars |
| Hair basics | Brush, hair ties, a mini shampoo |
| Deodorant and razor | Solid deodorant packs easily |
| Makeup | Only what you wear every day |
| Medicines | Daily ones, plus pain relief and bandages |
Documents and tech go on one list, because they travel together in the bag you carry. Check it twice: a passport is much harder to replace than a top.
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Passport or ID | Check expiry and visa rules well before you go |
| Tickets and bookings | Saved offline on your phone |
| Cards and some cash | A spare card kept apart from your wallet |
| Travel insurance | The policy details on your phone |
| Phone and charger | Plus a power bank for long days |
| Plug adapter | If you are going abroad |
| Earphones | For the plane, train or bus |
Keep medicines and anything valuable in that bag too, never in a checked case. Power banks have to travel there anyway, since they are not allowed in checked bags.
The night before, charge everything and save your bookings and a map of where you are staying for offline use.
A minimalist packing list for a carry-on
If you want to travel with one small bag, cut the clothes and keep everything else.
| Item | Full week | Carry-on only |
|---|---|---|
| Tops | 5 to 6 | 4 |
| Bottoms | 3 to 4 | 2 |
| Dresses | 1 to 2 | 1 |
| Layers | 2 | 1 packed, 1 worn |
| Shoes | 2 to 3 | 2, one pair worn |
| Toiletries | Small bottles | Travel sizes, the rest bought there |
The carry-on version works because of two habits. You wear the bulkiest things on travel day, and you plan one wash halfway through, in a sink with a little soap or at a laundry stop. With that wash, four days of underwear and socks is enough. Roll the soft pieces and pack them in cubes, and a small case holds more than it looks like it can.
Before you start, check your airline's size and weight limits for cabin bags, since they differ from one airline to the next.
Change it for the trip
The counts above fit most weeks away. A few trips need small changes:
- Beach: two swimsuits so one can dry, a cover-up, sandals, a sun hat and extra sunscreen. Fewer jeans, more linen and shorts.
- City: walking shoes you have already broken in, one outfit for a nice dinner, and a crossbody bag that zips shut.
- Cold: thermal or merino base layers, a warm coat (worn, not packed), a hat, gloves, a scarf and boots. Swap a couple of tops for warmer knits.
- Road trip: there are no size limits, but if you stop somewhere new each night, pack the next night's things in one small bag so the big one can stay in the car.
- Longer than a week: don't double the list. Pack for a week and do laundry.
- A work day in the middle: add one smart outfit. Our list of what to pack for a business trip has the short version.
Let your outfits write the clothes list
The clothes are the part of a packing list that most often goes wrong: too many "just in case" pieces, and not enough that go together. Planning the outfits first fixes both.
In Clozzie, make a lookbook for the trip and build one outfit for each day on the canvas from the pieces you already own. When the week is done, the pieces in those outfits are your clothes list. Check them against the counts above, pack them, and leave the rest at home. Then see how to pack clothes for travel for rolling, folding and what goes where in the case.
Questions people ask
How many outfits should I pack for a week?
Plan one outfit per day, built from 5 or 6 tops and 3 or 4 bottoms that all go together. You repeat pieces, not whole outfits.
How do I pack for a week in a carry-on?
Pack 4 tops, 2 bottoms, one dress and two pairs of shoes, wear your bulkiest layer, and plan one quick wash halfway through.
What is easy to forget on a packing list?
Chargers, a plug adapter, medicines, sleepwear and a bag for dirty laundry. Go through the documents and tech list the night before.
What should I pack for a two-week vacation?
About the same as for one week. Pack for seven days and plan one laundry day, so the case stays the same size however long you're away.
